Yesterday my boss asked me if I’d ever change my mind about not wanting kids. I said I didn’t know, that I couldn’t tell her who I’d be in two weeks time, let alone in 10 years time. But that I vehemently did not want children at this present time.
“You’d better not get pregnant then.”
“Well, I practice safe sex to avoid that, but if I did get pregnant I would get an abortion.”
“…I’m not sure how I feel about that.”
I stay silent, thinking, you don’t have to feel anything on that. It’s my body and my choice!
She continues, “I mean, I believe women have the right to choose. I’m pro-choice.”
She keeps talking for a bit, I can’t really remember what she’s saying at this point. Mostly offering examples of how people have used abortion that she approves of, until I come out with -
“Some people just aren’t ready for children. I know people who have been in committed relationships and are financially stable who have gotten pregnant and had abortions-“
“Oh, hold on. I’m not sure if I’m ok with that!”
“…”
“If people are financially secure then I don’t see why they can’t have the kid. If they can look after it then I don’t think abortion is right.”
“Because they’re not mentally prepared to have children? Because they don’t want to give up the rest of their life for a choice they didn’t make? Because it’s cruel to force a child to come into the world to parents that don’t want them?”
“I’m sure that once they had the child they’d love them regardless…”
“Maybe so. That shouldn’t dictate the path their life is going to take. Can you imagine being a child that knows they only exist because their parents had no other option?”
“They just shouldn’t have sex then. Ha ha!”
I am going to kill you I am going to kill you I am going to kill you
“I think people who get raped should be allowed to get abortions though!”
How very fucking generous of you
